Cowichan S-Bend Slalom Race
Sunday April 19 saw beautiful weather combined with higher than usual water levels to provide excitement and challenge at the Cowichan S-Bend slalom race. Fastest boat on the course was junior women's paddler Jazmyne Denhollander of Chilliwack. Her best run was a blazing 119 plus 4 seconds in penalties for a total of 123 seconds. A total of 15 racers braved the course with a few less experienced racers choosing to watch from shore due to the extra push that comes from unseasonally high water. Of special note - the comeback of Robin Sims of Penticton in the masters K-1. Robin is a slalom paddler who was active on the BC scene in the early seventies and has recently decided to get out and race some more after a hiatus of more than 20 years. Also, of the 15 competitors, 7 were juniors and 4 were first time racers. This event might be the start of a vibrant slalom scene on Vancouver Island
- take note all you mainland clubs!
