BLAZING PADDLES - 090930
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you and Welcome Back!
CKBC has recently lost several of our senior coaches.
Sara Hopkins has returned to being a full time student studying law at UBC so has resigned from her coaching role at the Fort Langley club. She will sit on the Board of Directors as VP High Performance so her wealth of knowledge will not be lost.
Lynn Dagenais has recently resigned her coaching duties at Burnaby. She has developed some very successful young athletes and her skills, knowledge and guidance will be missed.
Dimitri Joukovski was contracted to be with Kamloops until the end of September. He has had a very significant impact on the club and their athletes in his short tenure. We are optimistic that he will return again in the spring to continue where he left off.
On the upside....Ashley Rowe has returned this month from her maternity leave and will be coaching part time at Nanaimo. Welcome back Ashley. It doesn't seem a year since you left.
Jordan Pilon was the youngest Canadian paddler to race in this year’s Catalina Crossing, a 50-km outrigger canoe race held last month between Santa Catalina Island and Newport Beach, California.
Learn how to roll a kayak in the heat of the SFU Pool and finish up the evening with a game of Canoe Polo.
This will be held every Wednesday night through October finishing with a Cookie Race. Participants will learn the ups and downs of slalom kayaking (and you will also understand that bad joke!) Over the three nights you will learn the proper techniques, strategies, rules and regulations in a fun and safe environment. This program is targeted at paddlers of all ages with some paddling experience
VYPC's recently held two novice slalom camps with 5 paddlers, and is now preparing for the second year of our whitewater slalom program.
It's open to both novice and continuing paddlers ages 9 and up. Under the direction of Tim and Cara Marks, the group meets at various locations around southern Vancouver Island developing river kayak skills leading up to a race held on the Cowichan River in April. Info/ Registration online at http://vypc.sportical.net/events/247
Starting in October the Chilliwack Centre of Excellence will be running river lessons every Monday night at 4:30pm. Meet at the boathouse in the main beach parking lots at Cultus Lake.
VYPC will be running an outrigger skills course in October. It's open to both novice and intermediate level paddlers ages 13-17.
Participants will receive specialized coaching in both OC6 and small boats, twice per week during the month of October. The cost is $80/ person. Info/registeration online at http://vypc.sportical.net/events/245
Kristin Bauder and Kiran Basra recently returned from competing at the World Marathon Championships. Read about their adventures.
The CKBC Awards Banquet will be held on December 5th at the Golden Eagle Golf Course on Saturday December 5th. Be sure to attend to celebrate the successes of the year....bid on special silent auction items and purchase last minute holiday gifts.
ALL coaches are invited and encouraged to attend the CKC Coaches Conference in Vancouver on November 15th and 16th. The focus of the workshops are the midget and juvenile aged athlete so very relevant to our athletes.
Our Scholarship Plea
CKBC has fallen short of our goal for our annual scholarship donations so is pleading with all members to consider making even a small donation to the cause. It is critical that we keep and support our local athletes in the pursuit of their dreams. With the increased eligibility age of our Canada Games Team athletes we have been successful in keeping our older athletes in the province and competing and these role models are helping considerably with the development of our younger athletes.
