BC School Dragonboat Championships

BC School Dragonboat Championships

Under the leadership of Dave Nosella and his huge team of volunteers; Burnaby Canoe and Kayak Club hosted an extremely successful BC School Dragonboat Championships.  Sperling Elementary School  captured the elementary title in a final that pitted them against the defending champion Aubrey Bulldogs (both crews trained out of Burnaby Canoe & Kayak Club) and the Shoreline Sharks (training out of the Victoria Youth Paddling Club).  .  The Eric Hamber Eternal Dragons (training out of False Creek Racing Canoe Club) scored a narrow victory against the MRSS Water Rams (training out of Pitt Meadows Paddling Club).

It was especially great to see the number of competitive members from Burnaby, Fort Langley and Pitt Meadows who showed up to volunteer for the event.  Your presence and support  for events such as this does not go unnoticed.  It is wonderful to see you take leadership roles and be positive role models for all of the school kids in attendance.  We also had the support of 3 of our Regional Centre Coaches from Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Victoria.  Thanks Lynn, Sara and Matt!

Entry Level Competitive Coaching Course (ELCC) - Registration Deadline

An entry level competitive coaching course will be held in Maple Ridge (CKBC office) on the weekend of June 19th - 21st.  Each BC Games zone is encouraged to have at least one participant in this course to ensure that we meet minimum requirements for next year's BC Games event.  This will be the ONLY ELCC course offered in BC this year.  Course facilitators will be Sara Hopkins, Alan Carlsson and Peter Neidre (Coaching  Eduction Director - CKC).  There is an online registration deadline of June 16th.

Members who have previously taken this course who would like a 'refresher' course are invited to attend free of charge but are asked to register online so that we have enough lunches for all.

Members who would like to be assessed and achieve  'certified' status' are encouraged to register for their evaluation during the 19th - 22nd weekend.  Indicate your preferred time and place.

SPI (Summer Program Instructors) Camp - Registration Deadline

A comprehensibe Summer Program Instructor's Camp is being held June 25th - 28th to prepare ALL summer program instructors/coaches for the upcoming season.  Details and deadlines can be found on the website.

Make sure your leaders are SPI SCHOOL graduates!

Canada Day Regatta Update

We did not have enough participation to warrant booking a bus to go to this event so those who are registered have been booked air travel leaving early on the morning of July 1st and returning in the afternoon of July 4th.  Any members travelling separate from this group wishing to stay in group accommodation are asked to register online for the dates required by June 8th.  An 'up to date' package will be distributed to those attending shortly afterwards.

Western Canadian Championships

The Western Canadian Championships are being held in Calgary on the weekend of July 18th and 19th.  Canada Summer Games Team athletes will be attending this regatta as a tune up for the Games.  CKBC has chartered a bus that will leave the lower mainland early on the morning of July 16th.  Extra seats on the bus will be filled with other CKBC athletes wishing to attend on a first registered/first paid basis.   Online registration and payment is available on the website.   We will be staying at Mount Royal College in Calgary.  Friday will be a training day.  Saturday and Sunday will be race days.  The bus will leave to return home immediately after the regatta on Sunday.

We will require a male and female chaperone for the event.  Application deadline is June 20th.

Class 4 Driver Needed.....Desperately!

CKBC is looking for a driver with a class 4 license and a clean driving record to tow our van and boat trailer from Kamloops on August 2nd to Halifax arriving no later than mid day on August 9th.  Food allowance and accommodation enroute would be provided as well as a return air ticket back to BC.  Our Canada Games athletes and staff will be flying to Halifax to a PreGames training camp and an opportunity to watch the World Championships.  Contact the office if interested.
