Our website has been updated to include the historical recipients of those awards we have details for. Any help filling in the blanks would be great!
We are 'missing' the perpetual trophies/plaques for the following; Midget Women's Athlete of the Year and both of the Junior Trophies. If anyone knows of their whereabouts we would very much appreciate their return!
CKC AGM Update
Watch for more details in the next issue of Paddles Up. For for now it is good to know that for 2010 there will be 200m Midget events and the 6 km event remains.....so for all our midgets there is an 'extra' singles race. PaddleALL events will be included for physical and developmental disabilities as full medal events and integrated into the regular National Championships event schedule!
Check out this link for important information on World Championship and Olympic events including women's canoe and ParaCanoe!
Power of Sport & CKC Coaching Week
CKBC has a great opportunity to be a part of both the Sport BC Power of Sport Tour taking place in Langley/Fort Langley and CanoeKayak Canada's National Coaching Week as they bump into each other at the end of April. Watch for a WW Coaching Course, CanoeKids Course, Entry Level Competitive Coach Course, Level 1-2 Officials Course and hopefully the Grand Opening of the Salmon River Whitewater Slalom Course. The timing of these events is perfect for kicking off the season and inviting all the neighbouring schools for the opportunity to try our dragonboats in time for the BC School Dragonboat Championships at the end of May!
Program Description - Coaches play a critical role in the experience of young athletes and this national funding initiative will strengthen their impact and contribute to the success of sport clubs throughout the country.
One hundred grants of $2,000 each will be awarded each year to allow sport clubs/local sport associations to host coach training and education activities in support of community sport programs. There will be two application deadlines annually: February and September. There will be up to 50 grants for each application wave.
Target Audience - Club coaches and their young aspiring Canadian athletes.
Eligibility - This grant is open to sport-specific clubs, local sport associations, and/or leagues, operating at the community level and directing the majority of their programs towards children and youth (e.g. minor hockey associations, alpine ski clubs, soccer clubs, etc.).
For the purposes of this application, the term “club” is used to represent any local sport association operating at the community level.
Provincial/territorial sport organizations and national sport organizations are NOT eligible to apply.
Clubs will be able to develop and implement a season plan to train their coaches and improve the skills of their athletes.
Application Deadline - Monday, February 22, 2010, 11:59pm EST.
Burnaby Update
CKBC welcomes Kit Lo as the new Commodore of Burnaby Canoe & Kayak Club. He will be assisted by Jim Nosella (Vice Commodore) and Dan Disputa (Treasurer) and Katja Rademacher (Secretary). Welcome aboard all!
Arrangements have been made to ensure that the painted turtle is not left extinct and dredging will begin again on December 21st.
Fort Langley Update
CKBC welcomes Cheryl MacIntosh as the new Commodore of Fort Langley Canoe Club. She will be assisted by Jonathan Wilkins as her Vice Commodore and a board of six additional members with John Todd being the Flatwater Rep. Welcome aboard all. We look forward to working with you on many of the provincial events that will be hosted in your community in the upcoming year.
The 2010 CKBC/CKC fees have been established and clubs should ensure they are built into the costs of upcoming programs.
If you or your members use parental waivers in your programs, this article on a recent BC Supreme Court case will provide valuable new perspective on their enforceability and help you prepare and protect your organization from a similar situation.
