Nanaimo's 20 year old Nicole Haywood captured the gold medal in the women's C1 500-metre final at the recent Canoe Sprint World Championships in Dartmouth, N.S. Haywood finished in a time of 2:20.762, well ahead of second-place finisher Hannah Menke of the United States, who clocked in at 2:29.630 and Russia’s Maria Kazakova who won bronze.
This was the first World Championships for women's canoeing.
Who would have thought that the 3 waves used for the Team BC logo would have had such significance to our 2009 Canada Summer Games Team. Beginning with the threat of Hurricane Bill on the day of the paddler's arrival the wind did its best to ensure that our team experienced an event to be remembered and ofcourse as expected it was calm as glass on the morning of the distance swim......murphy's law I guess.
The good news was that our CanoeKayak Team finished with their best flag points finish ever, 8 of our 20 member team returned home with at least one medal. and all had the opportunity to meet Olympic bronze medalist Tom Hall (who's brother incidently is the bass player for Sam Roberts)
Congratulations!
Twenty eight athletes from 4 BC clubs recently returned home from a respectable showing at the National Sprint Championships in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Led by the 2 gold medals and 2 silver medals from Nicole Haywood of Nanaimo many of our athletes delivered personal bests. Among the silver and bronze medalists were Gillian Fedechko, Michelle Kosaka, Brian Malfesi, Ken Muir, Kristin Bauder and Sarah Poole. Rebecca Alley of Burnaby made the top 9 finalist positions in 4 of her events and the Juvenile Men's IC-4 finished 5th with Keiffer Johnson, Matthew Kuran, Keegan Nagai and Conor Wollbaum. The fact that Keiffer was competing in his first National Championships as a Bantam bodes well for the crew in future years.
Congratulations to all coaches, athletes and parents who attended on your admirable representation of our province.
Watch for BC's World Champion C-1 paddler Nicole Haywood in this weekend's Mazda Knockout.

BC will have the opportunity to cohost the CanoeKayak Coaches conference being held in conjunction with the Sport Leadership Conference in Vancouver in November. Watch for updates and registration. The focus of this year's conference will be on midget/juvenile aged athletes making it very relevant to our club coaches.
Community Gaming Grant Disaster
Despite stating that the priorities for the remainder of 2009/10 grants will be:
· Programs that support low income and disabled British Columbians.
· Programs that provide food, shelter and support to at risk individuals.
· Programs that support community health services.
· Programs that fund nutritional and similar programs in schools for underprivileged children.
· Public safety programs.
· A limited number of arts and culture activities.
· Community education programs, such as daycares and preschools.
· Public community facilities like community halls and recreation facilities.
· Youth and disabled sports.
· Non-sport youth groups, such as scouts and cadets.
CKBC recieved word this week that their application for funding through the Community Gaming Program has been denied and the decision can not be appealed for reconsideration. This is devastating news for our organization and the programs that we deliver.
September 30th is the deadline for submission of scholarship applications.
CKBC will endeavour to present 2 awards later this fall at our Annual Awards Banquet however we are currently falling short of donations. Members past and present are encouraged to make a contribution to this valuable program.
Last year's recipent's have showcased themselves and our sport well. Nicole Haywood was the Women's C-1 World Champion and led the Team BC Women to their best flag point performance ever at the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island. Michael Malfesi has demonstrated his leadership abilities assisting with program delivery at Ridge Canoe and Kayak Club, assisted with CKBC's presence in the BC Disability Games and was instrumental in the success of the recent Pre-BC Games Camp in Fort Langley.
With the dredging of Burnaby Lake immenint let's continue to encourage our athletes to stay in the province and strengthen the development of our sport.
