Pemberton Defends at Alcan

Alcan was great maybe our most successful yet. Eagles did their fastest time ever 1:55. beating San Francisco and Portland crews by 5 secs. Falcons won the B div championship in a nailbiting comeback by 3 /100s. The women were second in womens Competitive A and were the only team to give the World Championship bound FCRCC women a run for their money. They held off FCRCC in the womens Guts and Glory with Kayla Spencer steering.  The Baldies were 2nd in the Comp B final and 1st in the Comp B Guts and glory.

Tons of parents, good weather, 50+ kids from Pemby on the Podium.

Congratulations Victoria Youth!

Congratulations Victoria Youth!

The Victoria Youth Paddling Club (VYPC) fielded the first ever Vancouver Island-based junior dragon boat team to compete at the Alcan Dragon Boat Festival in Vancouver, June 19-20. A group of 20 island athletes, between the ages of 13-18, who trained together for seven practices (5 practices in outrigger canoes and 2 in an actual dragon boat) placed 7th in the top competitive division out of a field of over 25 junior teams from across Canada and the United States. Their final 500 meter race time of 2:05.88 actually placed them ahead of many of the well-established teams in the adult competitive divisions. Congratulations to every team member for working hard together to compete in this challenging and fast-paced team sport.

Victoria Regional Regatta

Victoria Regional Regatta

A highly eventful regatta with participants from Victoria and Nanaimo. It was really fun for all of the athletes involved as it was a low key event that gave them lots of race practice. This event also prepared parents on how regattas run and function which will be very useful as more serious regattas are held.

The cardboard boat building competition was a highlight.

20+ SPI Graduates

20+ SPI Graduates

Our first Summer Program Instructors Camp was extremely successful.  Burnaby, Chilliwack, False Creek, Fort Langley,  Kamloops, Nanaimo, Nelson, Pitt Meadows, Ridge and Victoria were all represented.  That's 10 clubs!!!!!  Thanks to our clubs for your support of this project.  Look for some great summer programs happening in our sport this summer led by those in the funky tie-dyed shirts indicating they are 'Graduates'.  We are planning a 'reunion' in November in conjunction with the National Canoe Coaches Conference so that clubs can share their best practices and be well prepared for programming next year.  Preliminary feedback supports this becoming a growing annual event.

This is a great  leadership opportunity for some younger coaches who may next year be able to fill the role of zone coach or manager at the Games.  Parent volunteers (with camp cooking experience) are also needed.

Travel assistance has been budgeted for however the exact amount available will have to be determined once we see the numbers registered and where they are from.  Each athlete from outside the lower mainland will recieve some assistance for travel.
