Fedechko Season Opener

Thanks to all the clubs who participated, and of course all the officials who made it possible.

Ribbons were awarded to bantam & under, with points awarded for Midget and above. The overall points winner was RCKC, second place was SCKC, and 3rd was Calgary.  Results are available on the website.

VKC Whitewater Festival

The second VKC Whitewater Festival took place May 1-3 with 140 athletes and 40 volunteers in attendance. Saturday started with river runs on several sections of the Chilliwack. The Fun Downriver Race took place in the afternoon – results are available at: http://www.vankayak.org/forum/index.php?topic=2086.0 . Chili with bread bowl dinner, salad and deserts were as delicious as last year. Countless sponsor prizes were raffled off after dinner (including paddles, helmets and a kayak), followed by live music with the band Switch. Yes, cow bells were involved again, and a really enthusiastic audience especially from Alberta. Sunday greeted us with snow on the mountains but the weather improved. The continental breakfast was a great addition this year and strengthened everybody for more paddling and the Kayak Throw Down. The festival website is http://www.vankayak.org/festival for more information.

Canada Day Regatta Update

The registration deadline is TODAY!   With the National Team Trials the weekend before and athletes flying to the event we did not have enough participation to warrant booking a bus.  Instead each of you who have registered by the deadline will be flying to the regatta leaving early on the morning of July 1st from Vancouver (sorry to those in the 'valley') on a direct flight to Regina.  You will be leaving Regina on July 4th at 1:50pm so will need to be very well organized to ensure boats are loaded and you are at the airport on time.  Your flight arrives into Vancouver at 5:30pm.  Exact details will be circulated shortly.  The price will remain as quoted at $600 each.  Thank you to Ron Wollbaum and Margaret Brent for volunteering with the managers duties, Marlene Hoyt our onsite shopper and to Dave Nosella and Hugh Alley for volunteering to drive your boats.  Your volunteer efforts are as always much appreciated!

Any of you not travelling with the group but wishing accommodation must indicate the nights you require by registering online by June 8th.  After this date we can not guarantee availability with the group.

A reminder that current medical forms must be sent to the office prior to June 15th (these can be found online under 'forms). Those of you who attended spring camp will have a current form on file for our team managers use.  An update is only required if there is a change to any of your information.

Canada Summer Games Team Trials

Canada Summer Games Team Trials

Trials for team selection to the Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island in August of this summer will be held at Whonnock Lake on June 6th and 7th.  Athletes are asked to register online for this event by June 1st so that the schedule and draw can be posted in a timely fashion.

Scholarship Campaign Underway

Last year saw the initiation of two scholarships opportunities for our members who are attending post secondary educational institutes in BC.  Thank you to alumnae Leigh Dewar, Mary Jane Abbott, , Patricia Lovatt, Peter Liljedahl and Robert Eckley for making these scholarships possible and congratulations to Nicole Haywood (of Nanaimo attending SFU) and Michael Malfesi (of Ridge attending UVic) on being our inaugural recipients.

We have just launched our second campaign for donations for this years recipients.  Each of you are encouraged to make a donation.  Donations of $100 or more are tax deductible.  Funds raised in excess of our goal will be invested for distribution in future years.  With the increase in the Canada Games age to U21 we are seeing a dramatic rise in the number of athletes staying in the sport past high school age.  Alumnae will recognize the challenge that both training and working presents when combined with university/college.

Application forms and details are on the website now!

Be a SPI School Graduate!

In an effort to best prepare all of our summer program instructors CKBC will be hosting a SPI CAMP from June 25th - 28th.  It is hoped that instructors from alll member clubs will attend.  Complete details will be posted on the website shortly.  Instructors will participate in a full day of Run, Jump, Throw with BC Athletics (and why can't their skills and drills be done on the water!), ACRiX (circus gymnastics) and CanoeKids to ensure that they have a full toolkit of activities to have all summer camp participants have a summer of fun with qualified instructors.   Instructors that have already completed the CANOEKIDS program are encouraged to attend and take leadership roles in the delivery.  Our goal is to make this our best recruitment summer EVER at ALL clubs!  Cost is $150 for the entire 3 days!
