Nicole Haywood was one of 3 finalists for the Sport BC Senior Female Athlete of the Year Award.  Unfortunately she was not the winner but clearly the support she received from her Regional Centre Coaches over the last year (Sara Hopkins (Fraser Valley), Ashley Rowe (Nanaimo) and Lynn Dagenais (Vancouver) illustrate that to CanoeKayak BC she is our winner!

Grant Rawstron named a Community Sport Hero in Langley

The Community Sport Hero® Award was created by Sport BC in 2001. These awards recognize coaches, officials, mentors and administrators who have dedicated themselves to grow and develop amateur sport at the community level. The commitment and leadership of people like these have allowed athletes and communities to grow and shape sport in BC and inspire others to become involved in sport.

Grant’s tireless dedication to bring a wide range of paddling opportunities to the Langley area is second to none.
With Grant’s leadership over the past years, the club has grown to over 350 members partaking in the sport in a variety of boats ranging in size from kayaks to dragon boats and includes ocean canoes and voyageurs. Grant has fostered all aspects of paddling from those who desire casual paddling, to historical re-enactments, to nurturing competitive athletes to reach their goals whether that is at the local level or the Canada Games & National level.
The August BC Day Voyageur activities in partnership with the Fort Langley National Historic Site provides the entire community with the opportunity to relive the colorful history of British Columbia settlers and are a draw for visitors to the Langley area. Grant ensures that as many people as possible get to participate in the boats.
Even though Grant always has a full plate, he is never too busy to take on something new, pitch in and roll up his sleeves to make sure the job gets done. These attributes coupled with his dedication to inclusiveness make him a true community leader.
Grant’s most recent accomplishment is the Paddle Sport facilities and big boat docks on the Bedford Channel in Fort Langley. This is the successful result of a decade of hard work, leadership and foresight. Not only does this facility provide much needed day to day safe water access, it also provides a venue for National level competition.
Grant is also the current president of Canoe Kayak B.C. He helps organize the Douglas Day Parade and was a founding member of the Fort Langley Legacy Foundation, Friends of the Fort and the Fort Langley Economic Committee. He was instrumental in the resurrection of the Fort Langley Chamber of Commerce. He was a scout leader. He has donated his time and expertise doing dental missionary work to third world countries.
Grant’s resume of volunteerism speaks for it self.

 On Wednesday, April 21st along side the BC Summer Games Torch Lighting there will be a ceremony, recognizing five community sport volunteers at the Langley Events Centre.  Congratulations Grant!

SAFETY TIPS: Cold Water Paddling Guidelines:

With the arrival of spring and warmer weather, athletes across the country are excited to return back to the water. Before heading out on the water, keep in mind that water temperatures are dangerously low, and extra pre-cautions should be made until water temperatures warm up.

The greatest danger or risk of cold water immersion occurs in the first 10 minutes of exposure, long before the onset of moderate to severe hypothermia (where a victim could go unconscious). This is due to initial “cold shock” when falling in the cold water, and the gradual loss of functioning of muscle groups to do any “meaningful” movements with the hands, arms, and legs. Studies have shown that most deaths due to cold water immersion occur within meters of safety, which could have been prevented with the use of a lifejacket, (coldwaterbootcamp.com, Giesbrecht, Lifesaving Society, 2008).

Below are CKC’s guidelines and recommendations on cold water paddling:

1. The Club Safety Officer and/or Head Coach shall monitor environmental conditions, including: water temperature, air temperature, wind, precipitation. Appropriate safety measures shall be undertaken. They include the following:

 All persons shall wear protective clothing appropriate for the conditions and their activity.
 Cold water/weather conditions require special safety precautions. When the water temperature is below 8 degrees Celsius, the following precautions apply:

o Participants below the age of 18 shall wear a Government of Canada approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD). The participants shall also be accompanied by a safety boat during on-water training.

o Participants 18 years of age or older are strongly advised to wear a
Government of Canada approved PFD. The participants should be accompanied by a safety boat during on-water training. Should participants 18 years of age or older choose not to wear a Government approved PFD during training they do so at their own risk.

 Where possible, participants should stay close to shore during on-water training.

 If the on-water training environment is within range of a communications network, coaches should be encouraged to carry a cell phone while on the water.

PADDLES UP, Circa 1970’s:

Tony Hall, former Orenda Canoe Club Head Coach, former Burnaby Canoe and Kayak Coach, National Team Coach, and coach of Steve Giles, sent this link of an old CCA movie (on the old 16 mm) called “Paddles Up”.

Although the video is 30 years old, there are still lots of relevant information and great reminders on proper posture, the exit and other elements of canoe technique.

Chocolate Milk as a Post-Exercise Recovery Aid

A recent study out of Indiana University looked at chocolate milk as a recovery drink. In the study cyclists drank chocolate milk for recovery after an exhaustive workout,, followed by a short rest and then another exhaustive workout. Not only did the results of this study suggest that chocolate milk is an effective recovery aid between two exhausting exercise bouts, it also showed that chocolate milk was as good as or better than other beverages such as sports drinks in aiding in recovery.

RECENT EVENTS

Rich Weiss Memorial

Race was small, but was smooth. 3 judging stations, a starter and timer with scribe. rThe results were done quickly and prizes handed out. Names on the Rich Weiss Memorial Cup for 2010 will be K1M David Ford, C1M Craig Allen, K1W Jazmyne DenHollander. One athlete, Veronica Oczkowski, swam on her 1st run.

BC Spring Long Distance/Eggatta

In the end 36 athletes participated (including members from our US neighbour Cascade) in our first event of the season.  Paddlers particpated in 2 to 7 (depending on their stage/age/boat)  4.3 km loops; some with portages, some without.  Marathoner Ian Mackenzie showed his mastery of the portages and commented positively on the regatta setting.  Long time marathoner Jim Lindsay helped with officiating in the portage area and was heard to say that he would be back for next year's event.  All went home with a chocolate treat delivered by the Easter Bunny!

Thanks to the Malfesi's for sharing their photos (as seen on our website and our Facebook page).   There was a single purple pogie returned to the office.  Call if it is yours!
